"One day I materialized nostalgia and memory on a plate,
that day I returned home."
Without knowing why, I wanted to leave a little bit of Portuguese soul across borders. When I traveled through South America, in 2012, I took with me my great-grandmothers and grandmother's doilies, and made with them works of art inspired by my experiences. I left a piece in each country.
It all started with a degree in fine arts at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha followed by a graduation in ceramics, ( 2014-2017) , in Argentina, with the artist and ceramist Verónica Funes, where I developed my technique and created Pratos da Prats™.
The brand name is a pun with my own name, Prats in portuguese sounds like dishes and because it all started with dishes, it was meant to be!
INÊS PRATS
Each piece is completely handmade, making them unique and irreproducible. The doilies I use are mostly made by my grandmothers and great-grandmothers, and the clay used is, whenever possible, local. I look for individuality in each piece and let the gesture and intention mark it. They are not regular, much less perfect, like us and our days.
I look for inspiration in the organic of nature, in the unknown and abandoned world bellow the sea, and in everything that lives in my imagination. The main theme of my creations is, without a doubt, Memory, and my pieces are born everytime I try to bring an emotion to life.
Ceramics have the ability to show us Time.
The process requires patience, acceptance and a lot of letting go! It is no coincidence that many claim it to be therapeutic.
A piece of Pratos da Prats will take a while to be born and will not be like any other, and that is what makes them special, the surprise when opening the kiln, and the magic of not being able to control everything.
